Early Life and Drug Use

Sarah Lorraine Spirit was born into a family of four children; she had two brothers and one sister. Her parents were struggling financially, and they later separated. Sarah’s father often engaged in criminal activities and found himself on the wrong side of the law. Sarah’s younger brother died when he was eight years old; he had gone on a hunting trip with his father and brother Joshua when his father accidentally shot him in the head.

Sarah’s brother Joshua lived with his mother while little is known about her sister; however, she is still alive. Due to the abject poverty of her family, Sarah was often involved in criminal activities, including drug abuse and theft.

Personal Life and Law Encounters

After Sarah’s father shot her brother Kyle, she was left home alone and had to find a way to feed herself and take care of herself. She started engaging in sexual activities and was already pregnant at seventeen. Years later, she gave birth to more children despite living in poverty. After her father was released from prison, he was violent to her, and she contacted the authorities multiple times, saying her life was in danger.

Sarah Lorraine Spirit moved to one of her boyfriend’s places but later moved back to her father’s house. She had trouble feeding and clothing her child; she even sought assistance from one of her friends to help her with diapers and food.

Sarah often found herself on the wrong side of the law; she was repeatedly arrested for battery, theft, and drug abuse. Sarah was also convicted on a theft case after stealing four hundred dollars and was supposed to serve a one-year jail time.

Circumstances Leading to the Death of Sarah and Her Children

Sarah’s father did not like her children; he used to call them names in public. Besides, Don Spirit had a strenuous relationship with his daughter; he took her to court and accused her of collecting child support for one of the children despite living with him, which might have made things worse between them and may have contributed to the death of Sarah Lorraine Spirit and her six children.

Besides, Sarah’s father was depressed and often blamed himself for the death of his son Kyle. On September 18, 2014, Don Spirit shot his daughter Sarah, his six grandchildren, and the shot himself.

Her Father’s Law Encounters

Sarah’s father has been arrested multiple times on charges of battery, theft, and illegally possessing firearms and drugs. In the 1990s, he was arrested for battery and robbery and spent some time in jail. He was also detained in the early 2000s after shooting his son; it was ruled an accident, but he served three years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm.
