In 1969, Jeff Cook, along with his cousins Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry, formed the band Young Country. Later on, Rick Scott joined the lineup, and they signed their first record deal with the now-defunct GRT Records. The label urged Jeff and the other group members to change their name to The Alabama Band. Soon after, the group shortened their name to Alabama and became the band audiences know and love today.

In a statement to USA Today, Jeff disclosed his battle with Parkinson’s, writing that “This disease robs you of your coordination, your balance, and causes tremors. For me, this has made it extremely frustrating to try and play guitar, fiddle, or sing.”
