If you’re considering a kitchen remodel or simply looking for ways to optimize your space, the L-shaped kitchen plan might be the perfect solution. One of the most classic and popular layouts, an L-shaped kitchen can be adapted to fit kitchens of various shapes and sizes while providing practical and efficient flow. In this article, we’ll explore 5 different L-shaped kitchen designs to help you envision your own dream kitchen.

Table of Contents

  • Classic L-Shaped Kitchen
  • Apartment-Sized Kitchen
  • Open Kitchen with Large Dining Area
  • Open Kitchen with Small Dining Area
  • Kitchen for Open-Concept Floor Plans

Classic L-Shaped Kitchen

As the name implies, this basic L-shaped kitchen consists of two “legs” of base cabinets covered with a countertop. Typically, one leg is longer than the other, providing most of the counter space, while the shorter leg might have a run of counter and an appliance or two, such as a wall oven and a refrigerator. This layout is common in small spaces enclosed by four walls, where two of the walls may be occupied by an entry door, passage door, windows, or a seating area.

Apartment-Sized Kitchen

In smaller spaces, such as apartments and condos, one-wall kitchen designs, also known as galley or corridor kitchens, are typically the most common. But, with some creativity, a small L-shaped kitchen can also be incorporated. As shown in this example, the drainboard sink is tightly fitted into the corner of the L, freeing up precious extra space on the short leg for a small section of countertop. Alternatively, this space could provide room for a refrigerator.

Open Kitchen with Large Dining Area

This L-shaped layout is perfect for an open kitchen plan that includes an island and a large casual dining area. The scheme is space-efficient and convenient because there is no physical barrier between the kitchen workspace and the dining table, allowing both areas to share some of the floor space.

Open Kitchen with Small Dining Area

In this layout, a medium-size island is placed in the middle of the L-shaped kitchen, incorporating a small dining table that seats four. Including some transitional floor space, the entire layout occupies just over 16 feet of width.

Kitchen for Open-Concept Floor Plans

If you want to integrate a small L-shaped kitchen with an open-concept living area, this might be the perfect layout for you. Partition walls can be added to provide separation between the dining and living spaces. Depending on the size of the space, the kitchen may also be able to include an island to provide extra counter space and storage.

In conclusion, the L-shaped kitchen design is a versatile layout that can be adapted to suit any kitchen size, style, and budget. From small apartments to open-concept living spaces, there is an L-shaped design that will fit your needs perfectly. Incorporate your own creativity and personal style, and you’ll have a kitchen that you’ll love to cook and entertain in.
