Are Cockroaches Dangerous?

Cockroaches are certainly unwelcome pests, but are they actually dangerous to humans? The answer is yes, they can be. Cockroaches are known to spread illnesses, allergens, and pathogens. They can also exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions. These bugs can also trigger allergic reactions in some people. Cockroaches are particularly risky for individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and young children. In short, cockroaches are not just unsightly – they can also pose a health risk. Let’s discuss the top five diseases that cockroaches can spread.

Salmonella

Cockroaches are known to carry salmonella, one of the most common causes of food poisoning. They can pick it up from rotten food or feces and spread it throughout the home. If ingested, symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. To get rid of cockroaches, try putting out a mixture of baking soda and sugar, which is lethal to them.

Typhoid

Typhoid is another disease that cockroaches can spread, caused by the bacteria Salmonella Enterica Typhi. Ingesting contaminated food or water can lead to symptoms such as high fever, headache, and abdominal pain. Humidity is a major factor for the creation of the perfect environment for their proliferation. Using neem oil is an effective remedy to keep them at bay. You can spray this oil over areas where cockroaches are commonly found.

Polio

Although rare, it’s also possible for cockroaches to spread polio. This viral infection can cause paralysis and even death in some cases. Cockroaches can pick up the virus from sewage and other contaminated areas. To kill cockroaches, try making a trap with boric acid and flour. The flour serves as a bait, and the boric acid will kill them when ingested.

E. coli

  1. coli is a harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness from contaminated food and water. Cockroaches can pick up the bacteria from feces and other sources and spread it throughout the home. One home remedy you can try is placing bay leaves in areas where cockroaches are present. The scent of the bay leaves repels the pests and keeps them away from your home.

Leprosy

Leprosy is a bacterial disease that can cause skin lesions and nerve damage. Cockroaches can spread the bacteria through their droppings and skin shedding. To get rid of cockroaches, try mixing equal parts of borax and sugar and placing it in areas where they are commonly found. Cockroaches will be attracted to the sugar, and the borax will kill them.

Take Preventative Steps to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Now that you know the five diseases that cockroaches can spread, it’s important to take steps to eliminate them from your home. Home remedies are a great way to help kill cockroaches and keep them away from your property. If the problem persists, it’s best to consult with a professional pest control company to ensure the problem is properly addressed.
