In the heat of the summer, the last thing that you want to have happen when you’re spending time at home is to have your air conditioner go out. But unfortunately for many people, this is going to be a reality of using your air conditioner to cool off your home. Luckily, there are things that you can do to help keep your home from getting too hot until you’re able to have a heating and cooling repair team see what’s going on.

To help you during this time, here are three ways to keep your home cool when your air conditioner breaks.

Table of Contents

  • Use Your Fans
  • Embrace The Darkness
  • Fill In The Cracks

Use Your Fans

Even if the air that you have in your home isn’t particularly cool at the moment, getting any kind of air movement is going to help cool things down. Especially if you’re feeling a bit sweaty, having some air blowing on your skin is going to help your body cool down.

Ideally, you should seek to place fans strategically around your home so that it’s pushing any cooler air up and around. This will usually mean placing fans right in front of an area that’s cooler and blowing that air up and out. If you can, put your fans either in front of a window that might be bringing in cooler air from outside. You can also try putting ice cubes or other cool items in front of the fan so that the cooler air coming off these items gets circulated, too.

Embrace The Darkness

If you live in a place that gets hot outside, keeping this heat out of your home is going to be one of the best things you can do to help keep your home cool while your air conditioner isn’t working.

To do this, you’ll want to close up all of the windows around your house so that very little sunlight is able to enter the space and heat up the rooms. Along with this, you should also try to keep from turning other electronics on, like your lights, to help keep this radiant heat from heating up the house as well.

Fill In The Cracks

In addition to sunlight coming in and heating up your home, any air from outside that might be warmer than inside of your home can also make your house hotter. Knowing this, you’re going to want to fill in any cracks around your home where air might be coming in.

Your doors and windows are most likely to have leaks that make your home too hot, so checking around these areas for any drafts and then sealing them up will help to make sure that you’re not allowing hot air from outside to heat your home up too much.

If you’re having to deal with a broken air conditioner, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how you can still keep your home cool.
